Singularity (Animation, Photography)

It explores the concept of Technological Singularity, Artificial Intelligence, Mass surveillance, and the digital/binary structures of the society. It also explores the concept of the “accident” as the Intermediate Space into which actual subjectivity is constructed. This idea is based on the “Ontology of the Accident” by Katherine Malabou (2012).

It is created by using a series of digital photographs with slightly altered code in each of them, creating a glitch in each of the photographs that were used to create the moving image.

Theory:

The digital reality is characterized by its ability for an endless replication of information that is stable, unaltered and perfect. If an error occurs, the digital system collapses into non-existence. If a single information within the digital streaming of information malfunctions, the whole system collapses.

The digital reality is therefore characterized by binaries: “regularities” or “errors”, as opposed to the physical reality that is characterized by a fluctuating singularity that exists as a fluid eventuality; “regularities” and “irregularities” are part of the same continuum.

Cultural simulations of reality, and Social systems tend to structure reality in a similar way (see “Semantic Ontologies” gallery). They form systematized, discursive structures of reality; simulations that are nevertheless perceived as “real”; binaries of “regularities” and “irregularities” within cultural discourses. The “error”, the “glitch” and the “disruption” of those systematized, discursive ways of understanding reality is charged with a sentiment of fear for an imminent collapse. It is this fear of the “irregularity” that prevents any actual cultural or sociopolitical change. Mass surveillance of population, social control, technocrats, institutionalized thinking, aesthetics, the rise of the far-right, are some of the mechanisms that ensure the continuation of the “regularity” within the socio-cultural status quo. This is politically more relevant today than ever, in an age of political and economic crisis within the “Western” societies.

On the individual level, these social and cultural systems are internalized. A superego figure strives for “regularity” and demonizes “irregularity” in each individual. Any psychological element that doesn’t conform to the regularity dictated by the cultural system is repressed or demonized. This reduces the creative individual to an object that serves, consciously or unconsciously, the established cultural order. Could subjectivity exist only in the irregularity? Is it necessary that to become a subject one must to accept the irregular, the “error” and the “glitch”?

In the work above, the “glitch” or the “error”, the disruption within the digital structure, opens up a space within the digital representation of the “real” that works as a possibility for an alternative representation of reality. The only possibility for social, cultural, political or personal “change” is to de-demonize the “error”, accept the “disruption” and the “glitch” as a potential new reality.
